Is Zao Fox Village Worth Visiting Without a Car?

• You want guaranteed close physical interaction
• You are uncomfortable around semi-wild animals

Practical reality

• The foxes roam free, and the operator is direct about the consequence: children fall and are bitten. Every child of elementary age or under must be accompanied by at least one adult, and one adult may not bring two or more of them. That is an entry condition, not advice.
• No pets.
• Closed Wednesdays, except in February and August, over the May holidays, and when the Wednesday is a public holiday. It stays open across the New Year period.
• Hours are seasonal: roughly 9:00 to 16:30 in summer and 9:00 to 16:00 in winter, with last entry thirty minutes before closing. Sunset can move them.
• Open in rain. Typhoons and heavy blizzards can shorten the day instead.
• Admission is ¥1,500 for junior-high age and above and free for elementary and under, as published on the operator’s site when read on 1 August 2026. The site carries a notice raising the price to that figure; confirm before travelling.
• The final connection from the nearest station is awkward without a car; many visitors use a taxi, a bus, or an organized tour. A bus runs from JR Shiroishi-Zao and JR Shiroishi stations, operated by Takeya Kotsu rather than by the village.
• Winter brings the classic snowy-forest photos but colder, slower travel.
