Japan Picks → Tochigi → Nasu Onsen & Shika-no-Yu
Nasu Onsen and Shika-no-Yu: What to Know Before You Go
Direct verdict
Nasu is a strong choice when the trip goal is mountain air, onsen and a car-friendly collection of stops. Shika-no-Yu is for travelers who want a traditional communal bath rather than a polished spa. The area is less convenient when you rely entirely on frequent urban transport.
Best for
- Onsen-focused travelers
- Drivers
- Couples
- Mountain scenery
- Combining bath, café and family attractions
Skip it when
- You need private bathing
- Traditional bathing rules make you uncomfortable
- You are attempting a short stop between distant trains
Practical reality
- The baths are sorted by temperature from 41°C to 48°C — six pools on the men’s side, five on the women’s, topping out at 46°C.
- That is hot enough that the bath lends out sandglasses so you can time your soak. Treat 48°C as a claim, not a challenge.
- Open 8:00 to 18:00 with last admission at 17:30, all year apart from maintenance closures.
- Adult ¥500, elementary-school child ¥300, preschool free, when read on 1 August 2026. A half-day soaking-cure ticket costs more on weekends and holidays than on weekdays.
- It is a communal bath of the old kind, not a spa: no private baths, and towels are bought rather than provided.
- The area is built around cars; frequent urban transport is limited.
- Optional nearby stops: Cheese Garden, Nasu Safari Park, the Nasu Kogen area.
Suggested route
- Arrive well before the 17:30 last admission
- Pick a pool by temperature and use the loaned sandglass
- Buy a towel there, or bring one
- Optional Cheese Garden / Nasu Safari Park / Nasu Kogen by car
