Nanyo Sky Park: Is the Paragliding View Worth the Detour?

Practical reality

• There are two separate visits here and they have almost nothing in common. You can drive up and look, or you can book a flight. Most of the conditions below apply only to the second.
• Going up for the view: the takeoff points are a hill you can park on. Jubunichi-yama sits at 500 m and Takatsumuji-yama at 700 m, both have large car parks, and the operator puts the takeoff fifteen minutes by car from Akayu Station, next to Route 13. No flight, no booking, no weight limit.
• The sea of cloud over the Okitama basin is an early-morning thing that burns off as the air warms, and autumn is when it forms most often. The operator invites people up to watch it, so it is a recognised reason to come rather than a bonus.
• In deep snow the road is not the way up — the school runs a snow buggy to the summit instead, so a winter view visit means their tour rather than your car.
• Booking a tandem flight is where the conditions start. Passengers must weigh 40–80 kg, which rules people out before anything else matters.
• Flights: book at least two days ahead by phone or email, closed Thursdays. Sessions meet at 9:00 and 15:00, but from October to March only the 9:00 session runs because it gets dark early.
• The two flight sessions meet in different places: 9:00 at the clubhouse at the foot, 15:00 at the summit log house. The free shuttle from JR Akayu Station and the Akayu Onsen ryokan is for the 9:00 booking only.
• Weather cancels flights on the day; the operator says mornings have the better odds. Under-18s need a guardian’s consent and everyone completes a health self-declaration first.
• Accessibility is unusually well handled for a hilltop: the Thermal Lodge has a barrier-free toilet and a ramp to its upper floor, the snow buggy tour takes anyone who can sit on the sled bench, and a wheelchair tandem flight exists — though it needs family and doctor consent and tolerates less weather than the standard one.
