Nikko is usually described as a day trip with a single ticket. It is neither, and the two misunderstandings cost different things.
Three cut-off times, not one
This is the part worth internalising before you plan the train.

The shrine opens at 9:00 all year.
The audio guide closes a full hour before the shrine. Arrive at 16:15 in August and you can buy a ticket and walk in — you simply cannot get the thing that explains what you are looking at. In winter that cliff is at 15:00, which is early afternoon.
The guide costs ¥500 a day, covers 29 buildings in the grounds, and exists in Japanese (adult and child), English and Chinese. It is picked up straight ahead once you are through the front gate, and individuals do not need to reserve.
For a shrine whose entire appeal is dense carved detail with stories attached, that hour matters more than it sounds.
What ¥1,600 actually buys

Toshogu admission only:
- Adults and high-school students — ¥1,600
- Primary and junior-high students — ¥550
- Groups of 35 or more: ¥1,440 and ¥495
That covers the main precinct: the front gate, Yomeimon, the worship hall, the stone room, the east corridor with the Sleeping Cat, the inner shrine, and Honjido with the Crying Dragon.
It does not cover the Treasure Museum, which is either ¥1,000 on its own or bundled:
- Shrine + Treasure Museum set — ¥2,400 adult, ¥870 child
- The Art Museum is separate again — ¥800 adult, ¥400 child
And — the one that surprises people most — it does not cover Rinnoji or Futarasan Shrine. Nikko’s UNESCO listing is two shrines and a temple, three institutions with three ticket desks. “The Nikko ticket” does not exist.
Teachers accompanying primary and junior-high pupils pay the same as the pupils.
Planning the day around the real closing time
If you are coming from Tokyo, work backwards from the ticket counter, not the gate:
- Summer: be at the counter by 16:30, and by 16:00 if you want the audio guide.
- Winter: 15:30 at the counter, 15:00 for the guide.
A relaxed morning departure from Tokyo lands you in Nikko early afternoon, which is fine in summer and tight in winter — and in winter the light is going anyway.
The shrine also notes that parts of the precinct can be closed for ceremonies, events or restoration work, and asks you to check in advance rather than discover it at the gate.
How to decide
- Decide whether you want the Treasure Museum before you queue. The set ticket is cheaper than buying both separately.
- Aim for the audio-guide deadline, not the closing time — an hour earlier than you think.
- Do not assume one ticket covers Nikko. Rinnoji and Futarasan are separate.
- In winter, treat 15:00 as the real end of the day.
- Check for ceremony or restoration closures before travelling.
What we could not check
We have not printed train fares or journey times from Tokyo, and we have not quoted admission for Rinnoji or Futarasan — different institutions whose current pages we did not read at source today. We name them here so you know to budget for them, not so you can plan against a number we guessed.

Frequently asked questions
Does the ¥1,600 ticket cover all of Nikko?
No. It covers Toshogu’s main precinct. The Treasure Museum, the Art Museum, Rinnoji and Futarasan Shrine are all separate admissions.
What time do I need to arrive?
For the shrine, 30 minutes before closing — 16:30 in summer, 15:30 in winter. For the audio guide, an hour earlier still.
Is the audio guide available in English?
