Japan Rail Pass Price Change 2026: Agency vs Online

The nationwide Japan Rail Pass has a channel-specific price change. From October 1, 2026, the prices charged by overseas travel agencies rise, while the official online purchasing service holds its prices for a limited period. This guide covers only that change — not whether the pass is right for your itinerary.

What is changing

There are two purchase channels, and after the change they no longer match. Overseas travel-agency prices go up for both the Ordinary and Green passes at every duration. The official online purchasing service keeps its earlier prices for a limited period; the end of that period has not been announced, and we will not guess it. The exact figures for each channel and duration are listed in the sourced-figures section below, straight from the official price pages.

Which price you pay

For the overseas travel agency channel, the price is determined by your purchase date at local time — not by your travel start date and not by your activation date. If you buy through an agency before the change date, you pay the earlier agency price; if you buy on or after the change date, you pay the new agency price. The official online service is a separate channel with its own prices for the limited period noted above.

NOZOMI and MIZUHO

NOZOMI and MIZUHO are the fastest Tokaido–Sanyo Shinkansen services, and they are not included by the Japan Rail Pass on its own. Pass holders may still ride them by buying the separate NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket before boarding. Without that ticket, use the Hikari or Sakura services on the same lines.
