The journey from Kyoto to Nara is short and almost everyone gets it slightly wrong, because there is a detail no timetable app puts in front of you:
There are two stations called Nara, run by two different railways, and they are about a kilometre apart.
Which one you arrive at decides how your day starts. The fare gap between the two routes is minor. The gap between arriving beside the deer and arriving on the other side of town is not.
The two stations
Kintetsu-Nara is the sightseeing side. Nara City’s own description of the area is blunt about it: this is where Todaiji, Nara Park and Kasuga Taisha are — the things people mean when they say “Nara”. The station is the terminus of the Kintetsu line from Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe.
JR Nara is the prefecture’s largest JR station, with big bus terminals on both sides. But the city describes the main sights as lying in the opposite direction from the station’s western side, which it characterises as a residential area where tourists rarely go.
Neither station is wrong. But if your plan is “see the deer, see the Great Buddha, get the train back”, Kintetsu-Nara starts you closer and JR Nara starts you with either a walk across town or a bus.
What Kintetsu costs
Read from Kintetsu’s own fare and limited-express charge table on 5 August 2026:
| Kyoto → Kintetsu-Nara | |
|---|---|
| Ordinary fare | ¥760 |
| Limited express surcharge | ¥520 |
Two things to understand about that second row.
It is on top of the fare, not instead of it. The limited express costs ¥760 + ¥520 if you take it.
The Kintetsu limited express is fully reserved. Kintetsu states that all seats are reserved and that you must buy the limited express ticket in addition to your ordinary ticket before boarding. You cannot simply walk on with a fare ticket.
You do not have to take it. Kintetsu’s ordinary and express services run the same route on the same ¥760 fare — the surcharge buys a reserved seat and a faster run, not access.
The JR side, and what this page will not tell you
JR West runs the Nara Line from Kyoto, including the Miyakoji Rapid service, into JR Nara.
We are not printing a JR fare here. JR West publishes its fares through a search tool rather than a table, and it did not render for our tools, so we have not read the Kyoto–Nara fare at source. Rather than repeat a number we have not verified, we would rather you check it — the fare is displayed on the ticket machine at Kyoto Station before you pay, and on JR West’s own site.
What matters more than the cash fare, for most visitors, is this:
Kintetsu is a private railway. It is not part of the JR group, so JR rail passes do not cover it. If you are carrying a JR pass, the JR route is the one your pass applies to, and Kintetsu is an extra ticket bought separately. Check what your specific pass covers before assuming either way.
So the decision usually resolves like this:
- Holding a JR pass → take JR, accept that you arrive on the further side, and plan a bus or a walk.
- No pass → Kintetsu puts you where you are going for ¥760.
If you are driving, the prefecture would rather you did not
Nara Prefecture’s own Nara Park guidance says this plainly: on holidays during the spring and autumn sightseeing seasons, roads around the park congest and car parks fill, so public transport is recommended. It also asks drivers who do come to use the designated park-and-ride car parks.
The prefectural car parks, read on 5 August 2026:
- Nara Noborioji — 275 cars, open 06:00–22:00 with 24-hour exit. On weekdays the first hour is free, then ¥500 per 60 minutes, capped at ¥1,500 for the day. On holidays it is ¥1,000 on entry, then ¥500 per 60 minutes, capped at ¥2,000.
- Nara Takabatake — 166 cars and 40 motorcycles, ¥1,000 per car and ¥300 per motorcycle, 08:30–17:00 with 24-hour exit.
- Wakakusayama summit — 45 cars, free.
One more from the same page, and it is a local rule with teeth: the prefectural car parks sit inside a no-idling zone designated by Nara City ordinance. You are required to switch the engine off while parked, and the prefecture notes that breaching the ordinance can be punishable.
A warning about the official page itself
The Nara Park access page carries route diagrams for the train and bus journeys — and beneath them, a note stating the information is current as of 1 March 2015.
That is more than a decade old, on a live government page, for exactly the journey times and connections a visitor would copy down. Even an official page can be stale, which is why the fares above come from Kintetsu’s own current table rather than from the prefecture’s diagram.
How to decide
- Decide the station before the train. If the deer park is the plan, aim for Kintetsu-Nara.
- Carrying a JR pass? Take JR and budget the walk or bus at the far end.
- No pass? Kintetsu at ¥760 puts you closest, and you do not need the limited express to get there.
- Only pay the ¥520 surcharge if you want a guaranteed seat — and buy it before boarding, because the limited express is entirely reserved.
- Travelling on a spring or autumn weekend? Do not drive. The prefecture itself is telling you not to.
- If you must drive, use a prefectural park-and-ride, and switch the engine off.

The Kintetsu fares were read from Kintetsu Railway’s own published charge table on 5 August 2026. The car park charges and the public-transport recommendation were read from Nara Prefecture’s Nara Park pages on the same day. No JR fare is quoted because we could not read one at source. Fares and parking charges are set by the operators and by the prefecture and change; check before travelling.
