Central Naha does not require a rental car. The Yui Rail monorail runs from the airport through the city center to Shuri, and the classic day — castle in the morning, pottery street and market in the afternoon, Kokusai Street in the evening — sits on or near the line end to end.
What most English guides have not caught up with: Shuri Castle’s main hall, lost in the 2019 fire, opens to the public on 23 November 2026, and the admission system changes the same day.
The monorail: fares and times, read from the operator
From the Yui Rail’s official fare and travel-time matrix, from Naha Airport station:

Practical notes, all from the operator’s pages:
- Tickets: QR tickets have replaced paper tickets at the gate; OKICA, Suica and other Japanese IC cards work, and credit-card touch payment is accepted.
- 1-day free pass: ¥1,000 (child ¥500), valid 24 hours from purchase. 2-day: ¥1,800 (child ¥900), 48 hours. Airport → Shuri → Makishi → airport is ¥1,100 in single fares, so the pass pays for itself on a castle day.
- Children under 6 ride free, up to two per paying passenger.
- Naha Airport station has coin lockers (¥600, until the last train) and a currency exchange counter.
Morning: Shuri Castle — and the November change
The park is open normally; the 2019 fire destroyed the main hall, not the castle. Current admission to the paid area is ¥400 (high school ¥300, children ¥160), open 8:30–19:00 (last entry 18:30) from April to November, 8:30–18:00 (last entry 17:30) from December to March. The free areas open at 8:00.
From entry on 23 November 2026, with the main hall’s public opening:
- Admission becomes ¥1,000 (high school ¥760, children ¥370) — the same whether or not you view the main hall interior.
- Interior viewing of the main hall requires a timed reservation — the “entry ticket with main-hall viewing reservation.” There is no extra charge, but the slot must be booked.
- The stated reasons for the increase are disaster- and fire-prevention upgrades plus operating costs — the hall’s reopening is the occasion, announced on the park’s official site.
Two discounts worth knowing: show a Yui Rail 1-day or 2-day pass at the window and the group rate applies (¥320 while current prices last, ¥800 after the change), and visitors with a disability certificate plus one carer enter free.
If your trip is before 23 November, you see the castle with the reconstructed main hall from the outside and the park as usual, at the old price. If it is after, budget the new price and book the interior slot when you book the flight.
Afternoon: Tsuboya and the market streets
Return toward Makishi and walk Tsuboya Yachimun Street before the covered arcades around Makishi Public Market. One correction to older guides: the Naha City Tsuboya Pottery Museum is closed from 1 September 2026 to 31 March 2027 for exterior renovation — the museum, not the street. The kilns, shops and cafes of Tsuboya are unaffected, and showing a monorail free pass gets discounts at several facilities along the route (Fukushūen garden near Kenchomae, ¥200 → ¥160, among them).
Workshops and shops are active businesses; observe photography signs and do not block narrow lanes.
Evening: Kokusai Street
Finish around Kokusai Street between Kenchomae and Makishi stations, keeping several food options. The main street is convenient for transport, but the smaller arcades and side streets can be more interesting. Follow local smoking and waste-disposal rules, and carry sun and rain protection year-round — shade matters more than any single sight here.

Is Shurijo fully reconstructed?
The main hall opens to the public on 23 November 2026 with a timed-reservation system for interior viewing. The rest of the park is open normally now, at the current ¥400 admission.
